Receives $1,000 Grant
ATHOL - The Star-Athol Masonic Angel Fund
recently received a grant of $1,000 from the Masonic Angel Foundation in
Orleans. This grant was part of a donation from a private donor in the Boston
area to provide holiday gift and benevolence packages to children in
communities served by Masonic Angel Funds.
This is the second year that Star-Athol Masonic Angel Fund has qualified for
the grant. Masonic Angel Funds in Winchendon and Gardner will also receive
holiday benevolence grants from this special fund.
For the second year, Star-Athol presented $1,000 to Valuing Our Children and
North Quabbin Even Start to help their children have a Merry Christmas.
One of the founders of the Masonic Angel Fund is Athol native Robert W.
Fellows of North Eastham. A software publisher and philanthropist, Fellows
established the first MAF on Cape Cod in partnership with retired banker John
Anden Sherman. Sherman and Fellows later formed a public charitable foundation
to serve as the national leader for what are now 73 MAF's operating in eight
different states.
MAF provides modest assistance to children in need who might otherwise fall
through the cracks in the social service system. System-wide, the typical MAF
benevolence is $225. The foundation projects that over $1 million in
benevolences will have been granted system-wide by the spring of 2004,
according to Executive Director Susan Hockman.
It is a charter requirement of each MAF that 100 percent of every dollar
raised in a community must go to local children. Sponsoring Masonic Lodges
assume any operating expenses of their local MAF.
